Tips for travel with your baby
Traveling with children is stressful, but traveling with an baby can be even more stressful. As you are packing, questions will constantly buzz around in your head like an annoying house fly! Questions such as;
1). Have I have packed enough things for the baby?!
2). What if the baby is really fussy on the plane?!
3). Have some of the things that I have packed for the baby (such as milk) be taken away from me when I go through security checkpoints?!
4). Do I have enough snacks packed for the other kid(s)
The questions and worries can be endless! I will never forget my experience on a flight to Jamaica. My youngest daughter was a baby and she got an ear infection during the trip. You never realize just how long it takes a plane to descend until you have a baby screaming in pain on your lap. The awful thing was that I could do absolutely nothing to stop the pain in her ears, only comfort her and pray that the plane would land quickly. Whew, I had never been so happy and grateful to have the plane wheels to touch the tarmac! As soon as we touched down, it was if someone flipped the off switch, she was quiet and smiling again.
If my kids had a sniffle, I would always give them a dose of Motrin or Tylenol an hour before takeoff. My pediatrician also recommended a nasal spray that aided in reducing the pressure and discomfort in the ears during take off and landing. Talk to your pediatrician to find out what they would recommend for your child. The following is a list of things to remember to take;
-Extra diapers
-Extra wipes
-Extra outfits ( I would recommend at least 3 per day)
-Extra outfits for yourself (you never know when you are going to get vomited on, peed on or worse!)
-Extra bottles and formula( if you are bottle feeding or breastfeeding)
-Breast pump (If you are breastfeeding and pumping as well)
-Stroller
-Extra blankets
-Motrin and/or Tylenol (always have on hand)
-Several toys that your child likes
- Go to the TSA website to find out how to properly pack food for your baby. This decrease the chances that things will be taken from you at security checkpoints. The website is; https://www.tsa.gov
My rule of thumb is always pack a little more than you think you will need!
Its better to have it and not need it, then to need and not have it!
